Marston Moor, North Yorkshire.

So for this story I will take you a little further away from where I have been writing about.  I am not huge on the history of this area but many years ago a huge battle was held there - around 1644 or so I have read. These days it is farm land, wide open and you can see for miles (in the daylight anyway) with one road going through the area. At the time, as well as running Paranormal Hull Research Group I was involved with Hull U.F.O Society - not so much for an interest in aliens but on occasion they went on ghost hunts and were more than happy to have me come along. On this occasion my cousin Paul came along. he was interested in ghosts too but not as heavily as myself, still I managed to get him to come with us.  We arrived as a group and had a quick  look around the area, nothing but fields for miles around.  As always, we were a chatty group - we waited around, had a coffee and waited for darkness.

As I didn't know much about the area or its history I decided I would simply wander around with my video camera and digital camera to see if I capture anything - of course using my senses to try and experience things too.

I remember the whole group continued to be quite chatty, myself and Paul decided to break away from the goup to obtain a little bit of quiet, even though we chatted we remained quiet enough to observe our surroundings.  We wandered around for several hours, both of us using the video camer and digital camera and we chatted to people briefly as we came across them.  There was only 2 events I would consider to be paranormal in nature even though we spent the whole night there.

Myself and Paul stopped to have a coffee from the flask I took with us and to rest for a while. As we sat drinking we heard the distinct sound of a horse neighing (naying?). We stopped our conversation instantly and looked at each other with amazment - although we did clarify with each other what we heard. We already knew there wasn't any live stock around and I doubt there would be any horse riders around at 3am!

The next, and final, event of the evening was as I walked around with Paul we both got a strong smell of sulpher - like when you strike a match. It lingered for quite a while before leaving us. There were no fires around, we would have seen the glow of fire for a long way as at this point was pitch black  - the only light we had was the video camers night vision and a small torch.

The only thing I can think of is that we were experiencing things that were involved with the battle that was held on those very fields, the sound of a horse and the smell of sulpher - was it the smell of musket fire and gunpowder? I guess I will never know, just another item of the unexplained list.

As a final note on this page, while on this ghost hunt I had the pleasure of meeting Jason Karl (Ex-Most Haunted presenter).  He spent a lot of time talking to me about all sorts of things, quite a nice guy really and did seem to love the camera pointed his way! We spoke quite a  lot about Most Haunted, the locations, the activity and the people on the show too - let me just say, it was a real eye opener to the "realness" of the show!
